WAC Attack!
Are there not a million and one acronyms in education? Sure, there are! But one of my very favorites is Writing Across the Curriculum, or WAC. WAC has a storied and sometimes controversial history since there are so many ways to teach college-level writing – Writing in the Disciplines (WID), First-year Composition (FYC), writing workshops, peer review, one-on-one conferences, collaborative writing projects, Writing in Digital Environments (WIDE), so on and so forth.
There are also many excellent WAC-related resources on the web, too, many of which are FREE! Free is my kind of resource.
Here are a few of this month’s favorite *free,* WAC-related resources. I hope you enjoy them!
The WAC Clearinghouse – the mothership of all things WAC-related; trust me: this is a fantastic resource for anyone who is involved in teaching writing
Copy(write): Intellectual Property in the Writing Classroom, Edited by Martine Courant Rife, Shaun Slattery, and Danielle Nicole DeVoss – Another great open-access e-book collection from the WAC Clearinghouse
“Moving Beyond the Course to the Virtual Campus: Perspectives on the Evolution of Social Web Modalities in Education” webinar archive hosted by The Chronicle of Higher Education – available for viewing until January 12, 2012
Present Tense: A Journal of Rhetoric in Society’s newest volume is out too – I especially am looking forward to reading McNely’s Sociotechnical Notemaking: Short-Form to Long-Form Writing Practices and Gallagher’s Review of Reframing Writing Assessment to Improve Teaching and Learning.
Lastly, please consider checking out a recent plea for support from the editors of the WAC Journal. They are seeking tax-deductible contributions to continue the existence of the journal. They have a modest budget ($6,000 per year). Unfortunately, they’ve lost institutional support at this time, so if you are interested in supporting the journal, please visit http://wac.colostate.edu/support.cfm to learn how to contribute.
I hope you enjoy some of these WAC-related resources. Please share your favorites in the comments section too! I’d like to update the Resources’ section of this blog in early January 2012.
Kind regards,
Kella
